Quoted from Cossack (Terry Melnyk) on 13thman.
I first got the idea when I found out that The Argos would be honouring Greycupgarry at their home opener, and the tailgate would also be held in memory of our friend Garry. I figured the best way to pay respect to his memory would be to do it as an Argo fan. When some fellow Ticat fans thought I’d lost my mind, I had to remind them that I have been and would still be the staunchest of Ticat fans. Except for Saturday. Besides, I knew Garry would be looking down on me and laughing his ass off.
I made my way down to the tailgate lot through a pounding rainstorm for just after 10 AM. Mulder had already set up a blue canopy and was heating up a pot of pulled pork in honour of Garry. There were already 5 or 6 fans already there and having a few cold ones waiting for the rain to stop. It eventually stopped and the lot became packed with familiar faces.
We talked, laughed, reminisced, drank and had some pulled pork that was not only delicious, but warmed the soul as well. I was overcome by the need to yell out AAARRRRGGOOOOOOOOSSS!!!!, and then (because I was an Argo fan for a day), give the Ticat fans in attendance the mandatory dirty look when they would yell SUCK! After some members of Garry’s family showed up, CFL Fans Fight Cancer founder Jarrett Harris (Jarecanada on 13thman), gave a talk about Garry’s influence which brought tears to our eyes. After toasting Garry, Wes Bauer of Chase the Cure spoke to us, Details of Wes’s fundraising journey across our country, can be found here. Check out the July 11th entry. http://chasethecure.blogspot.com/ Wes is a very cool guy who is doing something incredible and amazing.
I then headed to the game and watched the tribute to Garry on the Jumbotron. The Argos did their best to make me feel at home. I got to yell at Adriano Belli for hurting the team by taking stupid penalties and watch the team commit too many turnovers. I almost felt like a Ticat fan again.
Overall it was a great day. Argo fans really “Pulled Together” to honour Garry. In the end the difference between Ticat and Argo fans is the fact that for 3 hours we cheer passionately for different teams. Other than than that, there’s not a hell of a lot of difference. Garry knew that and helped the rest of us truly understand it.
Thanks for the lesson my friend.
